From Wall Street Journal’s Washington Wire:

Mitt Romney was surrounded by supporters in Florida today as the Republican presidential hopeful faced a critical contest in another pivotal early-voting state.  …

Among the surprising attendees: “the screamer.” Diane Herndon, the runner from Bondurant, Iowa, who couldn’t stop screaming when she saw Romney jogging last summer, headed south to help the campaign’s Florida team. …

From Wall Street Journal’s ‘Washington Wire’ blog:

[Button-seller Cameron Koepke] predicts Obama will win in Iowa tonight with Sen. Hillary Clinton coming in second and John Edwards third. (Koepke also consults with five colleagues selling campaign paraphernalia at events across the state.)

On the Republican side, Koepke, who has followed Huckabee events the last week or so, said the former Arkansas governor will win. He says Mitt Romney doesn’t have a chance. “Romney can’t draw a crowd in Iowa,” he said. …

From New York Times blog:

If Republican turnout today is 80,000 or above, Mitt Romney’s campaign could be in trouble, according to Doug Gross, Mr. Romney’s Iowa campaign chairman.

That would mean evangelical turnout is higher than expected, with the vast majority of those votes likely going to Mr. Romney’s rival, Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist minister who has clearly benefited from evangelical unease about Mr. Romney’s Mormon faith, as well as the fact that until several years ago he was a supporter of abortion rights. …

From Wall Street Journal:

As prediction-market traders have tried to make sense of these conflicting signals, they have upgraded Mr. Obama’s chances of winning (he’s now a better than 50-50 bet), while Ms. Clinton is a clear second-favorite, with a just-under one-in-three chance of winning. …

It looks like a fairly even race, although in recent hours, the markets have broken somewhat toward Mr. Huckabee. Even though the balance of probabilities rest about 60-40 (toward Mr. Huckabee), this is a fairly slender lead. The similarity of the prices on these two candidates may well reflect the uncertainty of forecasting the complexity inherent in the Iowa caucuses, rather than a view that the caucus totals will be close. …

At Washington Post blog:

Also, Fred Thompson’s campaign said one staff member and several of its supporters received computerized calls that targeted Thompson and John McCain for criticism. One supporter, according to the campaign, said the call starts with a live operator saying, “Do you have a minute to listen to a taped message from Fred Thompson?” The caller next plays a tape of Thompson talking about how he doesn’t have the “fire in his belly.” The operator then returns and says “Do you really think a man like this could beat Hillary Clinton?”

Even special interest groups weren’t immune.

From “Political Punch” ABC NEWS blog:

In Marion, Iowa, City Councilman Craig Adamson — a registered Republicans who considers himself a supporter of Mike Huckabee — sent out an email asserting that if “you think religion, especially Christianity, is being marginalized by ACLU and other organizations” then “you would be piling on” if you vote for Mitt Romney because “Mormonism is a cult. In case I didn’t type it clearly enough … Mormonism is a cult.”

As first reported on the Iowa Caucus Cooler blog, Adamson wrote that “based on my knowledge of Mormonism, I would not trust him as my president as he might be fooled into believing most anything. How could he possibly be trusted to negotiate with Islamic radicals? He might believe Muslim and Mormons are the same, just like he tries to pass off Mormons as Christians.”

Adamson sent the email to a friend who had invited him to a Romney event, hitting “reply all.” …
