From International Herald Tribune:

Showing up at training camp as a rookie sporting a tattoo from another NFL team is a recipe for constant harassment.

But when you’re a third-round pick thrust immediately into the starting role at free safety, constantly ask questions, don’t miss a practice and perform well in preseason games, veterans might give you a break.

So as Charles Godfrey runs around in a Carolina Panthers uniform, he hasn’t had to worry about that Houston Texans’ logo on his right hand. …

Godfrey claims he’s still adjusting to the speed of the NFL and another position change after he recorded five interceptions and didn’t allow a touchdown playing cornerback for the Hawkeyes last season. …

From Gazette article in April:

Former Iowa cornerback Charles Godfrey was selected in the third round by the Carolina Panthers, while the Pittsburgh Steelers picked Godfrey’s former teammate Mike Humpal in the sixth round. … Godfrey, 22, was picked fourth overall in the third round, the highest state player selected. He could play safety and on special teams for Carolina. When asked about his playing style, Godfrey said “physical, fast and consistent.” …

From The Hawk Eye:

ASHBURN, Va. — Chad Rinehart certainly fits the role of the stereotypical Iowa lineman: Raised in a small town, worked on a corn farm, grew to 300 pounds and played football at a state university.

Rinehart, the son of a truck driver and a school teacher, baled hay and detasseled corn before enrolling at Northern Iowa. Of all the Washington Redskins rookies, perhaps none is getting better reviews at training camp than the third-round pick from Boone — population 12,000. …

From The Indianapolis Star:

“If he were 6-3 or 6-4, there’s no doubt in my mind he would have been recruited heavily as a quarterback,” Mooresville coach Mark Bless said. “He has a great understanding of the game.”

But [Trent] Mossbrucker knew his foot would be his ticket to Big Ten Conference football, always a dream. He impressed Iowa’s coaches at a camp last summer and accepted a scholarship offer, turning down Illinois and Indiana. …

From New York Times:

Eight people died, and students from the school have helped dig their graves.

The tornado also wiped out Ed Thomas’s football program. And Ed Thomas is not the type of man to stand for that.

That is why, minutes after emerging with his wife, Jan, from beneath the basement steps to find their house on Conn Street and all the ones around it virtually erased from their foundations, Thomas walked — his two cars were destroyed, too — the few blocks to school. And he started to rebuild the past 33 years. …

Improbably, for a school of about 240 students, four former players are in the N.F.L.: defensive end Aaron Kampman of the Packers; defensive end Jared DeVries of the Lions; center Casey Wiegmann of the Broncos; and center Brad Meester of the Jaguars. …
