Members of one of the oldest and most obscure Arab American communities in the country are connecting with the Detroit-area as they work to put halal meat from Iowa on local dinner tables.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa is home to one of the first mosques established in the U.S., built in 1934 during the Great Depression.

It’s also home to Midamar Corp., a major exporter of halal meat, run by descendents of four brothers who moved to Iowa from Lebanon in 1888.

The company recently reached out to a Dearborn-based distributor and began selling products in local stores. …

Friends and family of 2-year-old Charlise “Twinkie” Carlson of Suttons Bay [Michigan] will be eating the snack cakes as she undergoes surgery to remove a benign cyst from behind her eyes.

The girl is the daughter of Clay and Jennifer Carlson of Suttons Bay.

“Clay started it out as a way for people to keep good thoughts coming her way,” Jennifer said Tuesday from the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in Iowa City. “And it’s really taken off.”

Charlise was diagnosed as having a dermoid cyst in November after her mother noticed a small spot near her daughter’s nose. While the cyst itself is benign, surgical removal is required since continued growth would make her susceptible to contracting meningitis, an illness involving inflammation of the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord that can be fatal. …

- Walker’s Food Products Co. is recalling 16-ounce, 5-pound and 10-pound containers of four-bean salad with expiration dates of Dec. 23, 2007, through April 5, 2008, because they could be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. This can produce a toxin that causes botulism. Symptoms may include double or blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, distention of the abdomen, constipation, muscle weakness and paralysis of breathing muscles, possibly resulting in death. No illnesses have been reported.

The 16-ounce containers were sold under the brand name Kay’s Gourmet. The 5- and 10-pound containers were sold under the Walker’s Food Products Co. brand name. The salads were sold through distributors in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Details: by phone at 800-725-2372 extensions 14 or 18.
