If it’s true that love waits, Dale and Marie Brawner, who are both 82, can teach a master class on patience.

One evening back in the summer of 1945, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Marie Vermeersch was one of seven young women dressed in summer formals at a party for the local country club’s upcoming Cotton Ball. Dance partners were in short supply — local young men were still fighting in World War II — so organizers of the ball had invited seven young Navy men, home from the South Pacific and attending flight school at nearby Cornell College, to the party.
