DIRECTV to offer local HD programming to Cedar Rapids/Waterloo market by mid-2008 December 13, 2007

DIRECTV will offer local HD broadcast networks in 76 markets, representing more than 75 percent of U.S. TV households, when it rolls out 11 additional local HD markets by mid-2008. …

DIRECTV will deliver HD programming from each of the primary broadcast networks ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC where available, to customers who subscribe to any TOTAL CHOICE® programming package that offers local channels.  …

The 11 local markets to receive HD programming from DIRECTV include:

  • Albany/Schenectady/Troy, N.Y.
 
  • Paducah, Ky.
  • Cedar Rapids/Waterloo, Iowa
  • Tucson, Ariz.
  • Flint/Saginaw/Bay City, Mich.
  • Waco/Temple/Bryan, Texas

Interstate Power and Light Co. (IPL) announced it acquired a wind development site in north central Iowa for an undisclosed amount from St. Louis-based Wind Capital Group LLC.

The Buffalo Creek Wind Farm in Franklin County, Iowa, has the potential to produce up to 200 megawatts of emissions-free wind-generated electricity when completely developed…

Like a handful of communities in Iowa — places named Denison, Ottumwa, Postville and Marshalltown — Storm Lake, a city of about 10,000, offers a glimpse at how new immigration has transformed the nation’s rural middle and with it, the political landscape.

Two decades ago, less than 1 percent of the people in Buena Vista County, where Storm Lake is the county seat, were Hispanic. By last year, the county had the highest percentage of Hispanic people of any county in Iowa, with 19.2, compared with less than 4 percent statewide. Buena Vista County also ranks highest in Iowa in percentages of those learning English in school, of recent international immigrants and of residents born in other countries. …

Today, minority residents make up more than 40 percent of the population, law enforcement officials here say; the numbers in the local schools, the authorities there say, are even higher — 49 percent Hispanic, 10 percent Asian, 4 percent African-American. … more >>
